HMS Bounty: Captain missing after Hurricane Sandy sinks ship, 42-year-old woman identified as dead crewman
A Canadian-built replica 18th-century sailing vessel got caught in Hurricane Sandy’s wrath and began taking on water Monday, forcing the crew into lifeboats in rough seas off the North Carolina coast.

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 14 people by helicopter and spent much of the day searching for two missing crew members.

One of them, 42-year-old Claudene Christian, was found unresponsive in the water on Monday evening. (Petty Officer 2nd Class Tim Kuklewski/ /U.S. Coast Guard via Getty Images; Tammy Hoy/The Canadian Press)

Disaster strikes at sea.

So sad to hear this news after working so closely with these ships over the past few years (sob)

Free War of 1812 events

The time has come to celebrate 200 years of peace with FREE commemorative events all summer!

June 15 – 17 Visit Fort York for a weekend of dance, poetry, storytelling and live music.  After dusk, explore the 200 illuminated tents of The Encampment.

“The Encampment is an innovative exhibit that shatters expectations for outdoor art.”  - The Fulcrum

A unique form of archaeology turns a historic site into sculpture on a grand scale, vividly evoking the War of 1812’s personal toll. Conceived as a “temporal village” marking the bicentennial of the war of 1812, The Encampment comprises 200 A-frame tents pitched on the grounds of Fort York, which fell to U.S. forces during the war. Each tent contains an installation by one of 100 artistic collaborators who have created a visual representation of an aspect of the war’s civilian history, gleaned from research into real-life stories of family, love, loss, survival, patriotism, collaboration and betrayal.

War of 1812 important because it kept out U.S. government, Newt & Snooki: poll

To learn more about the War of 1812, visit the online map and historical timeline I designed for Parks Canada, The Historica Domininion Institute and National Geographic. www.eighteentwelve.ca

The Ipsos Reid poll conducted for the Historica Dominion Institute for the bicentennial of the war found that 54 per cent of Canadians felt the most significant outcome was that the invaders were turned back. Given a list of things which might define Canadian identity, 53 per cent of respondents picked universal health care, but winning the War of 1812 and squelching the American invasion was ranked second, with 25 per cent support. Americans had a dramatically different take. For a third of them, the key outcome of the war was their national anthem. Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the Star Spangled Banner after watching a British naval bombardment of Baltimore’s Fort McHenry in September 1814. A plurality of 36 per cent saw no significant outcome at all. When the Canadians were asked what would be their great concern had the war gone the other way, 60 per cent said they wouldn’t want to share the American political system. “We agree that we do not want to be under the same politics and government system as they have in the States and we take pride in that,” said Jeremy Diamond, director of development and programs for the Historica Institute (read more)
