Additional note provided by my Dad’s twin brother, Charles Beer…
This photo is called “conception”because my life would not have happened had the man at the bottom of the stairs (my grandfather) not let these chaps on the plane! My Dad is leaving for Africa with Guy Arnold (at the top of the stairs) as CUSO co-operants … next stop, MEETING MY MOM…the rest is history.
“Towa,
You should know that that particular picture is actually from late June 1960. The third person, David Milne, who was also a Pickering student along with David and Guy were headed to what was then British Guiana. It was this trip that whetted David’s interest in development work and that trip led next to his going to Jamaica in 1963 for one year and then in the fall of 1964 to Zambia. Your point in the story is quite valid even if the picture was at an earlier stage of his journey to the birth of one Towela Beer!!!
The actual funding for that trip was supported by your paternal grandfather, Harry, and by Uncle Johnny with a few friends also involved. The following year (1961) cousin Ann Skinner and I went to Jamaica for three months as part of an initial group of five Canadian university students. The trip you Dad took in 1960 and the one Ann and I did was just one of the steps that then led to the official founding of CUSO.
There were a number of people involved in that development and Guy Arnold was one of them. You should also know that cousin John Wood went to India in 1962 with another organization that also became part of CUSO.
Lots of family were involved in those early years.
